What kinds of Savings can I expect?

It depends, but most merchants see interchange reductions of 20% – 40% off of standard rates. If your business processes over $100k/month in credit cards, (click here for our high-volume B2B pricing) that can equate to thousands of dollars in savings every month. There are many different interchange rates that “qualify” for a reduction, and many savings are based on unique business factors such as MCC code and transaction size. So, we’ll focus on some of the more common/popular ones. Scroll down to see a few example transactions, both without level 2/3 data, and also including level 2/3 data to see the cost savings.

Mastercard Example

We’ll assume that this was a common Mastercard Corporate card. Without level 2 data, a typical Mastercard Corporate card will have the underlying interchange rate of 2.65% + $0.10. So, for a $5,000 sale, the math is straight-forward: $5,000 x 2.65% = $132.50. Add in the $0.11 transaction fee, and the total underlying interchange fees are $132.61 for a $5,000 sale.

But what happens if we run this as a level 2 transaction? Per Mastercard, if you use the MX B2B app to include all pertinent level 2 data, the underlying interchange rates fall all the way to 2.00% + $0.10/transaction! That’s significant – running the quick math tells us that the sale only costs $100.11 in interchange fees, saving over $32 on this single sale. That’s over 24% savings in interchange fees!

Visa Example

We’ll assume that this was a Visa Purchasing card. Without level 2 data, a typical Visa Purchasing card will have the underlying interchange rate of 2.55% + $0.10. So, for a $5,000 sale, the math is straight-forward: $5,000 x 2.55% = $127.50. Add in the $0.11 transaction fee, and the total underlying interchange fees are $127.61 for a $5,000 sale.

But what happens if we process this with level 2 data? Per Visa, if you use the MX B2B app to include all required level 2 data with the sale, the underlying interchange rates fall all the way to 2.05% + $0.10/transaction! Not bad – plugging in those numbers tells us that the sale only costs $102.61 in interchange fees, saving a full $25 on this single transaction. That’s a 20% reduction in interchange fees.

Level 3 and Large-Ticket Reductions

If you process Level 3 data, interchange fees can be reduced by over 40%This can mean hundreds of dollars of savings on a single transaction. Wow! Here are two common examples:

Visa Level 3: 1.85% + $0.10/sale. For a $3,000 sale, you’d pay $55.60 in total interchange fees. Compare that to the $76.60 you’d have paid on a standard Visa Purchasing Card, and you’re looking at interchange savings of $21 on a single $3,000 Visa transaction. That’s over 27% below standard interchange rates!

Mastercard Corporate Large Ticket: 1.25% + $40.00/sale. For a $20,000 sale, you’d pay $290.00, or only 1.45% in total interchange fees. Compare that to the $530.00 you’d have paid normally, and you’re looking at interchange savings of over $240 on a single $20,000 Mastercard transaction. That’s a 45% reduction from standard interchange rates!
