Co-founder and Chief Evolutionary Officer, Jeff began selling credit card processing services 1991. In 1993, he became Regional Manager at Cardservice International, the largest MSP in the country at that time. In early 1998, seizing the opportunity with the advent of ecommerce, Jeff moved to Authorize.Net (now a unit of Visa USA) as SVP of Business Development, creating the most successful online payment gateway in those days.
In 2007, the idea of starting a company whose purpose was to give back to the community financially, and support sustainable business, was manifested as Dharma Merchant Services – whose name is a reminder and inspiration to align our individual actions with our values and core beliefs, rather than on economic outcome.
Jeff serves on the boards of Tricycle Foundation, based in NY; Green America, based in Washington DC; and Conscious Capitalism of the Bay Area. He’s also a weekly volunteer at the Buddhadharma Sangha (meditation group) at San Quentin Prison.
Nick is the Chief Operating Officer at Dharma Merchant services, and is Jeff’s stepson. He holds a degree in Economics and International Studies from Virginia Tech, and worked in the financial services industry prior to joining Dharma in 2011.
Enjoying the action of life, Nick is often found on his bike or rock climbing with his wife, or out with their dog, Hubert. He is a whole-hearted supporter of the Paleo lifestyle, and believes that happiness and health are derived from finding one’s own inner peace and living simply. In that light, he enjoys being in nature, eating seasonal foods, and supporting his community by spending money locally and on ethically created products.
He truly feels that our human mission is to enhance our collective situation by operating with compassion, care, kindness, and moral responsibility in every aspect of life. Working at Dharma allows him to bring these values into the business world, and spread compassion wherever possible.
Trace is grateful to support and serve the amazing Dharma community as Senior VP of Sales. Trace worked in the merchant services industry for 15 years before finally being introduced by a friend to Jeff Marcous and Dharma Merchant Services in 2010.
Born and raised in Texas, Trace still can drawl with the best of them, which you will hear should you happen to call in to the Dharma offices. Growing up in rural Texas, Trace learned to love the piney woods and open pastures and developed a fondness for digging in the dirt. Trace continues this passion today by tending a farm plot in Northern California that provides beautiful organic vegetables for friends and Dharma family during Summer and Fall.
Trace is so happy to support the thousands of thriving, diverse clients and partners of Dharma Merchant Services.
Ron is very happy to be a part of the Dharma family, where he gets to work every day with such amazing people and merchants! He has been the Office Manager at Dharma since 2012, thanks to best friend Trace Wendell for bringing him on board. His previous work experience includes financial services, online media and the restaurant industry, and he holds two degrees — in History and Sociology — from Sacramento State University.
Ron is a native of Alexandria, VA and after moving around a lot as a child, has lived in San Francisco since 1990. He loves taking advantage of all the amazing restaurants and the interesting mix of people the city has to offer, and feels that spending money locally and getting to know the owners of the places he frequents really helps a neighborhood and city thrive! After work you can find him going for a run in Golden Gate Park or at his favorite yoga studio practicing his Crane pose, or playing with his dogs.
Diann joined the Dharma team as Account Executive in March 2014 after being introduced to Jeff by her good friend, Heidi. After years of working in the consulting and healthcare arenas, it was time for meaningful change.
As Diann bases her life practice on Ahimsa – the principle of compassion and non-violence – Dharma’s mission resonates deeply. She believes in the interconnectedness of all beings and living consciously, and is passionately committed to a green, vegetarian lifestyle. As a humanitarian and animal advocate, she is devoted to giving back to her community by volunteering with several local non-profits.
Diann holds an MFA in Painting from the San Francisco Art Institute and is deeply inspired by the diversity of arts and culture here in San Francisco. She loves music, is an avid runner and hiker, and can be found on the trails of her native Marin on weekends.
As the Director of Support, Derek’s the one responsible for managing Dharma’s 5-star support team. Derek is incredibly well-versed in configuring terminals, helping merchants track down discrepancies, and troubleshooting issues. It takes a lot to ruffle Derek’s feathers, and he remains cool and collected no matter how frenzied the pace gets here in the office. We can always count on his steady, even disposition.
Before joining Dharma, Derek recently completed his Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration, and feels blessed that Dharma is able to facilitate his growth professionally and personally, introducing him to a new ethos in business … and he loves it!
He’s an outdoor enthusiast – appreciating both the fast and slow pace of life – riding his bike all around San Francisco, and loves mountain climbing, and the beauty of northern California. He and Nick have been best friends since they were kids, growing up together in Northern Virginia, and are both delighted to be working together at Dharma.
Anthony is the newest member of the Dharma team – joining in September 2015 – and is the friendly voice you’ll likely get when you call in. In his role as Support Specialist, Anthony will help you in resolving support issues and ensure you are well taken care of.
Growing up in Northern Virginia, he has known Derek since the 3rd grade and also went to high school with both Derek and Nick! He graduated from the University of North Carolina after studying Business Administration with a Marketing concentration and a minor in Studio Art.
Anthony moved back to the DC area after university and worked a few “undesirable” jobs until he began with a Government Contractor for the DOJ in 2013. He worked with the Environmental & Natural Resources Department and got his first professional exposure to a large entity “going green” and our federal government’s role in sustainability efforts.
Since moving to SF he’s enjoyed exploring a new city, the non-artic weather of the East Coast, and the new and improved work-life balance. Anthony loves working on art projects (drawing, painting, street photography; and hopes to learn how to screen print soon), listening to and collecting records, and spends plenty of time outdoors jogging, hiking or playing sports.
Cyndia Biver Marcous
Cyndia comes to Dharma with long history in marketing and graphic design with small businesses, tech sector and nonprofit. Most recently, she offered strategic planning and marketing consultation for a SF Bay area nonprofit.
She moved from Washington DC to San Francisco in 2006, taking an extended sabbatical from the business world and busy lifestyle to slow down and breathe (literally), spending time studying Buddhism, doing meditation retreats, and living at a Buddhist monastery for a year.
In 2014 she joined the Dharma team as Director of Marketing, seduced by the opportunity to work with her son Nick, and newlywed husband Jeff, helping what she thinks is an awesome company and team of people!
When she’s not at Dharma, she can be found managing meditation retreats, offering spiritual care and support to hospice patients, or digging in the garden.
Alexia was the co-founder of Dharma Merchant Services and is Jeff’s daughter. In early 2013 she left Dharma to pursue a career in nursing, inspired by humanitarian volunteering she’d been doing in Haiti, and currently serves on Dharma’s Board of Directors.
She holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and an M.B.A. from Drexel University. Alexia was a computer programmer and systems architect consultant for 12 years prior to founding Dharma.
Operating under the banner of “right action, right livelihood” allowed Alexia to use her daily work to engage in the practice of balancing the spiritual and material, strengthening the mind through innovation and technological understanding, and expressing compassion for our environment and for each other. Working in the merchant services industry also did wonders for her sense of humor.
Hubert (Dharma Dhog)
He is a 20-pound french bulldog, born in July 2012 in San Francisco. He’s a very gentle, sweet little boy who loves playing with sticks in the park or digging up sand at the beach. Hubert snorts more than he barks, and snores louder than most humans. He loves to meet people and get petted.
He often visits the Dharma office, or spends the day “working” aka getting extra play time and woofing around with everyone.
