I have a brand new business, can I sign up?
Yes, you certainly can. We are happy to assist with the setup of your merchant account. In the interest of full disclosure, this is why many new merchants opt not to sign up with a full-service MSP like Dharma:
- If your anticipated sales volume is relatively low (under $10,000/month, and in particular, under $3,000/month) then you may wish to start with a provider who doesn’t have any static monthly fees.
- Some new merchants intend to process very high-ticket sales through their merchant account. While that’s OK after establishing a history of successful processing, it’s tough to get an approval for a new business with a very large high-ticket amount, due to the inherent risk of business failure. Sometimes it’s best to accept checks for the first few months and establish a history. Or, you may wish to accept credit cards for certain lines of your business to establish a processing history, and then add in your high-ticket items at a later date.
- There are usually some sort of startup costs, and some new businesses aren’t looking to spend money. Usually, you’ll either be purchasing a new terminal or mobile swiping device – so somewhere between $100 and $300 is a good estimated start-up cost if you require any hardware.
